Shoryu Cavern

Overview

Shoryu Cavern is one of Japan’s largest and most spectacular limestone show caves, located beneath a coral reef uplift on Okinoerabu Island. Discovered in 1963, 600 m of its total 3.5 km length is open to the public, featuring dazzling stalactites, stalagmites, and massive flowstones described as some of the best in the country.

Highlights

  • Natural formations include impressive flowstone draperies, “Christmas Tree,” “Music Hall,” and more, all illuminated for an otherworldly atmosphere.

  • Archeological finds include two 7th-century human skeletons with bead necklaces, enshrined inside a torii gate in a small cave shrine .

  • Designated as a Natural Monument and part of the Amami‑Ryu Islands National Park since 2017
