Kirishima Jingu: Sacred Shrine of the South

Kirishima Jingu: Sacred Shrine of the South

Nestled in the forested slopes of Mount Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kirishima Jingu Shrine is one of Japan’s most revered Shinto sites. Known as the “Nikko of the West” for its vivid vermillion architecture and intricate carvings, the shrine is deeply rooted in Japanese mythology. It honors Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, who is said to have descended from heaven at nearby Mount Takachiho-no-Mine to begin the lineage of Japan’s emperors.

Originally established in the 6th century, the shrine has been rebuilt multiple times due to volcanic eruptions, with the current structure dating back to 1715. In 2022, its main buildings were designated as National Treasures, a first for Kagoshima Prefecture . Visitors can explore the richly decorated main hall, walk among ancient cedar trees, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The shrine is easily accessible by train or bus from Kagoshima City, and nearby Kirishima Onsen offers a relaxing retreat with its renowned hot springs.
