A Hidden Coastal Wonder of Tokunoshima

A Hidden Coastal Wonder of Tokunoshima

Innojofuta, also known as Megane Iwa (Spectacles Rock), is a dramatic coastal promontory on the west coast of Tokunoshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. Part of Amami Gunto National Park, this natural wonder features twin window-like arches sculpted into coral-limestone cliffs, framed by the vibrant blue ocean—creating one of the island’s most iconic and photographed sites.

At sunrise, the rugged shoreline and thundering waves offer an especially magical spectacle, with powerful surf carving the rocks and creating dynamic, ever-changing vistas. Visitors describe feeling transported to “a completely different world,” as the untamed beauty seems to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

The region is rich in biodiversity—from endemic species like the Amami rabbit to historically significant granite structures along the coast—making it a compelling destination for both nature lovers and photographers.
