This majestic banyan (gajumaru) is estimated to be over 300 years old, making it the oldest and largest tree on Tokunoshima Island. It grows beside coral-stone walls once part of a samurai residence, creating a powerful visual of nature’s resilience . According to legend, a Kenmun spirit resides within its roots, and the tree symbolizes health, vitality, and good fortune . While it stands on private property, visitors are welcome to view it respectfully from the roadside.
