Established March 16 1934, this expansive 366 sq km park features over 20 active volcanoes (like Shinmoe‑dake), scenic crater lakes (Onamiike, Miike), coastal wonders (Sakurajima, Cape Sata), and therapeutic hot-springs (Ibusuki sand baths). Rich ecosystems stretch from subalpine rhododendrons and beech-fir forests to subtropical coastal flora and coral reefs, with rare birds like fairy pitta and ruddy kingfisher. Popular activities include hiking the Karakuni–Onamiike trail, sand baths, birdwatching, scenic drives, shrine visits, and volcanic geology tours.
